Flexential

One of the largest US colocation and hybrid IT providers, with 40+ data centers, a hosted VMware-based private cloud, DRaaS, and a national interconnection fabric. Flexential is the strongest option when your VMware exit doubles as a data center strategy decision.

Overview

Flexential is a national data center platform formed from the merger of Peak 10 and ViaWest. It operates more than 40 data centers across roughly 19 US markets, tied together by a 100G private backbone (its FlexAnywhere fabric) with on-ramps into the major hyperscalers. Its portfolio spans retail colocation, hosted private cloud, DRaaS, and managed network and security services.

For VMware customers, Flexential is interesting because it covers two exit paths at once. Its hosted private cloud is VMware-based — so you can lift-and-shift into a managed vSphere environment and let Flexential carry the licensing. Alternatively, you can repatriate or refresh into Flexential colocation, keep ownership of your stack, and run whatever hypervisor you choose on your own hardware with the provider handling power, cooling, and connectivity.

That breadth makes Flexential a common anchor in hybrid designs: production private cloud in one market, DR in another, colocated legacy gear in a third, all on one contract and one network fabric. The interconnection story — private connectivity between your cages, their cloud, and AWS/Azure on-ramps — is a genuine differentiator versus cloud-only providers.

The flip side of breadth is that VMware cloud is one offering among many rather than the company's singular identity. Pure-play VMware operators like Expedient or 11:11 will sometimes out-execute on cloud migration specifics, while Flexential wins on footprint, interconnection, and the ability to put colo and cloud under one roof.

Why consider Flexential for a VMware exit

If your Broadcom renewal coincides with a bigger question — "should we even keep running our own data center?" — Flexential lets you answer both at once. You can move VMware workloads into its hosted private cloud, move owned hardware into its colo, or split the difference, without stitching together multiple vendors.

Its 19-market footprint also matters for latency-sensitive or geographically distributed organizations: there is usually a Flexential facility within striking distance of your users, and DR can be placed in a genuinely separate region on the same fabric.

Honest pros and cons

Strengths

  • 40+ data centers in ~19 markets — strong odds of a facility near your operations
  • Covers both exit paths: managed VMware private cloud and colocation for self-managed stacks
  • FlexAnywhere 100G fabric with private cloud on-ramps simplifies hybrid architectures
  • DRaaS placement across genuinely separate geographic regions
  • Single contract for colo + cloud + network + DR

Weaknesses

  • VMware cloud is one product line among many, not the company's sole focus
  • Managed-service depth varies by offering; complex managed cloud needs careful scoping
  • Large provider — mid-market customers should negotiate service levels deliberately
  • Colo path still leaves hypervisor licensing and operations on your plate

Who Flexential fits

Best fit if…

  • Your VMware decision is tangled up with a data center exit, consolidation, or hardware refresh
  • You are multi-site and want production, DR, and colo on one provider and one network
  • You want the option to run your own hypervisor on owned hardware while offloading the facility
  • You need private connectivity into AWS or Azure alongside private cloud

Probably not a fit if…

  • You want a pure managed-cloud experience with no facilities discussion
  • You are a small environment (a few dozen VMs) without colo needs
  • You need international data centers
